Come learn with us on May 31 as we discuss Solar Shingles. What are they? How are they changing the solar and roofing industries?
About this event
Solar shingles, or solar roof tiles, are made of slim photovoltaic (PV) sheets that either overlay or replace the existing shingles on a roof. Solar shingles work similarly to solar panels—they both absorb the sun’s rays, converting the light to thermal or electrical energy. However, solar shingles are a roofing product, as the PV sheets are added to asphalt shingles. There are a few important differences that you should know about when determining if shingles or panels are better. We are lucky to host GAF Energy - a subsidiary of GAF, a 136 year old company - to share with us their latest revolutionary innovation.
We'll unpack the basics to this American made product, the differences between solar panels, energy storage capacities, and how roofers and HOAs are seeing Solar Shingles as "The Fair Compromise" between solar panels, and a regular roof.
About our speakers:
David Altuna, Territory Manager for GAF Energy - David, an Austin native, has been with GAF for over two years leading their expansion across Texas. His journey with solar started working with Sunpower as a solar advisor where he found a niche supporting the decarbonization of new homes. After Sunpower, his solar and electrical expertise continued to expand at Freedom Solar and Hays Energy Services, always searching for the best solution to bring to customers seeking climate action and resilience. Now at GAF, he's tasked with educating the Texas territory on this revolutionary way of electrify homes and improving roofs with the Timberline Solar Shingle, revolutionizing 21st century home building.
About GAF Energy - In January, GAF Energy unveiled its Timberline Solar™, the only roof system to directly integrate solar technology into traditional roofing process. The world’s first nailable solar shingle was a hit at the 2022 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, where it won multiple awards — including the highest honor, the Best of Innovation award for “Smart Cities.” The product was also named an Innovation Award honoree in two categories.
Over 5 million new roofs are installed on U.S. homes each year. One out of every four of those roofs come from GAF, the sister company of GAF Energy and one of the largest roofing and waterproofing companies in North America. With access to GAF’s national contractor network, GAF Energy is uniquely positioned to bring residential solar to the mass market, transforming more roofs into solar roofs each year.
