Event description

Description

Freed slave, abolitionist and woman's rights advocate Sojourner Truth came to Akron's woman's rights convention in 1851 and gave the now famous "Ain't I a Woman?" speech. But, what did she really say?

Actor, director & playwright Josy Jones re-enacts the Sojourner Truth speech as reprinted in the Anti-Slavery Bugle in 1851.

The reenactment takes place at the Wesley Temple AME Zion Church on North Prospect Street. The group then proceeds to the Sojourner Truth Ohio Historical Marker on High Street (now the United Way), where Society President & CEO Leianne Neff Heppner will talk about the 1851 convention.

This program is funded in part by Ohio Humanities. It is free and open to the public. Reservations are required to maximize the attendee experience.
