SEPWA in collaboration with the Esperance port zone GRDC's Regional Cropping Solutions Network and DAFWA's Soil Compaction project are bringing this unique event to the Esperance port zone to help you dig down to find out more about the soils you make your living from.

The Soils Masterclass will provide you with an opportunity to talk with some of Australia's finest soils specialists in this once-off event.  The day will include opportunities to:

  • Engage with up to five soils experts during the 30 minute lecture/QA sessions.
  • Discuss your questions in paddock during the visits to soil pits, composting demonstration site, delving and claying examples and more.
  • Find out more about maching machinery for the establishment of CTF systems on your property via the 1:1 consultations.

Soils specialists will include:
  • David Hall (DAFWA): Improving lighter soil types, including the use of delving and claying.
  • James Hagan (DAFWA) & Andrew Newall (NewAg Consulting): Matching equipment for Controlled Traffic systems. Economics of CTF – constraints and rooting depth, machinery planning, transition planning of machinery.
  • Nigel Metz (SEPWA): Raw data from CTF vs non-CTF paddock scale work; matching machinery to fit.
  • Yvette Oliver (CSIRO): Targeted acidity management with reference to rooting to target where to apply lime, considering yield potential.
  • Bill Bowden (Consultant): The value of chemical soil tests and nutrient budgeting.
  • Chris Gazey and Liam Ryan (DAFWA): Soil acidity for south coast farming systems.
  • Jeremy Lemon (DAFWA): Economic considerations of various nitrogen sources.
