Event description

Description

Soil is the foundation of agriculture and soil health is the foundation of sustainable farming. A basic understanding of soil and soil health will help start you on the road to achieve success in your farming operation.

In this workshop you will learn about the physical and chemical properties of soils through discussions and demonstrations, and how these properties relate to sustainable agriculture through soil health practices. You will also learn how to sample soils for fertility testing and how to interpret test results.

The workshop is taught by Jim Lathem. Jim is the State Soil Scientist with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service in Athens, Georgia. He began his 37-year career with NRCS a few months after graduating from the University of Georgia with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture. Jim has held several positions with NRCS as Project Soil Scientist, Soil Survey Project Leader, Resource Soil Scientist, and State Soil Scientist. He is the author of several USDA publications and is a Certified Professional Soil Scientist / Soil Classifier by the Soil Science Society of America.

Due to the interactive nature of the workshop space will be limited. A light lunch is included. Registration is free.
