Event Details

The next Society of Professional Obituary Writers Conference will take place in St. Petersburg, Fla., May 12-14, 2011.

It will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 12, with a conference kickoff dinner at The Columbia at the Pier, 800 2nd Ave. N.E., St. Petersburg. No registration fee is required for the dinner, but participants are responsible for ordering and paying for their own meals.

Professional development sessions will take place from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday, May 13, and 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, May 14, at The Poynter Institute, 801 Third Street South, St. Petersburg.

Program highlights are as follows. All times are approximate. Schedule is subject to change.

From 10-11:30 a.m. Friday, keynote speaker Kelly McBride, a senior Poynter faculty member, speak about reporting, writing and ethics pertaining to obituary writing.

Noon-1 p.m. Friday:  2011 SPOW Awards luncheon.
Lunch at the Poynter campus will be followed by presentation of SPOW Awards for obituary writing. Winners will be asked to share the story behind their winning obits and to take questions.

During the afternoon session Friday, Dan Reimold, a journalism professor at the University of Tampa, and Michelle Boyet, a former online producer for The South Florida Sun-Sentinel, will present a session on blogging and social media.

From 9:30-11 a.m. Saturday: Police Forum. A panel of St. Petersburg Times and reporters will discuss coverage of their city’s recent series of police shootings, obituaries written for the dead police, coverage of their funerals and other issues raised in the process.

Additional topics will be addressed before and after the aforementioned highlights.

Early bird registration for the 2-day sessions at Poynter is $125, if paid by May 1. Late 2-day registration is $150.

For Friday only, the registration fee is $100. For the Saturday half-day session only, it's $50.
