Event description

Description

This society is dedicated to the support and promotion of Mexican-American philosophy in all of its diverse manifestations. It seeks to provide a venue for inquiry into philosophical issues that are of particular concern for Mexican-Americans and, more broadly, persons of Latin American descent. To this end, the society is particularly interested in social justice issues (e.g. imperialism, colonization, immigration, civil and human rights, race, gender, discrimination, and language) as well as issues pertaining to identity and citizenship in its various forms (e.g. social, political, or cultural). This society also supports historical and contemporary research on Mexican philosophy, including the philosophies of Mexico’s indigenous peoples and current work on indigeneity. Lastly, this society supports scholars who are or wish to become actively engaged in their communities by providing a venue to present civically-engaged scholarship.

In light of this inaugural conference, we anticipate submissions that generally reflect the mission statement above, or address the following questions:

  • What is Mexican-American Philosophy?
  • Is Mexican-American Philosophy needed or necessary?
  • How is Mexican-American Philosophy different from Latin American Philosophy?
  • Can Mexican-American Philosophy help solve the problems that confront Mexican-Americans?
  • Does Mexican-American Philosophy subscribe to Western concepts/theories/paradigms of thought?
  • If Mexican-American Philosophy does subscribe to a Western paradigm, does this affect/impact Latin@ struggles?
  • If Mexican-American thought does not subscribe to a Western paradigm, then what does it subscribe to?
  • Is there an intersection between Mexican-American Philosophy and Mexican Philosophy?
  • Can anyone, e.g. whites, do Mexican-American Philosophy?
  • Why Mexican-American Philosophy and not Chican@ Philosophy?
