Social Studies Lessons that Engage- Part 2 Grades K-5

Description: This session builds on our January session where Principal Designees analyzed and compared Danielson’s Framework Components of 1e- Designing Coherent Instruction and 3c- Engaging Students in Learning. Participants established a common understanding of the connection between the two components and identified key elements from both 1e and 3c that promote intellectually engaging lessons. Participants then examined a New York State Social Studies Resource Toolkit-3rd Grade Inquiry, the New York City Scope and Sequence, and the New York State Social Studies Framework to focus instruction and make instructional choices to engage students in their learning.

Participants also explored strategies that supported the planning and implementation of engaging lessons for all students.  Strategies included:

  • o   Examining and creating grade level inquiries, arcs of instruction (series of sequenced lessons), and drafted learning targets
  • o   Evaluating a Launching Lesson for the big ideas within an inquiry
  • o   Evaluating a Read Aloud connected to the concept of culture to identify teacher moves that promote engagement
  • o   Identifying and describing the ways in which learning activities support the social studies practice of Chronological Reasoning and Causation

In this session participants will be continue to deepen their understanding of creating arcs of instruction (chunks of coherent, sequenced lessons), and learning targets to engage students in their learning.  The WHERETO template (Understanding by Design) will be introduced for participants to reflect on lesson design. We will look at the Danielson components of 3c and 3d as well the Universal Design for Learning guidelines and strategies when planning engaging lessons and learning activities that support the social studies practices for diverse learners.

In addition, we will spend some additional time on a variety of ways to launch an inquiry or unit. This session extends our January work as a direct result of the feedback participants provided from that session.

All participants are asked to bring:

 1.      Artifacts that connect for the Bridge of Practice from the January session to this session. Artifacts might include: a launching activity (station boards, read aloud) to launch a unit, tasks, an arc of instruction/lessons, or learning targets for specific lessons. Teacher team plans and/or student work/data that resulted from the January session’s strategies shared and implemented back at school.

2.      A favorite Read Aloud to share with the group as this session falls on WORLD READ ALOUD DAY and connects to the launching/immersion activities we modeled at the last session.

3.      Previous session resources and your curricular resources for your current or upcoming inquiries/units to support grade level planning.

4.      Useful resources to share with the group as part of  Queens South BFSC Resource List for social studies  

 Intended Audience:

*A Principal Designee (one per school) who is fully engaged in designing, implementing and evaluating school-wide professional learning activities.

* It is expected that participants will attend ALL social studies sessions and will take responsibility for leveraging the content and experiences of the sessions to build capacity within their schools.

*To maximize capacity building across district schools, participants will be asked to create a “Bridge to Practice” implementation plan and to bring back related artifacts and data to share at each meeting.
