Focus: Student Choice in Showing Evidence of Understanding

Participants will continue to expand their bank of strategies for responding to texts/sources by creating a variety of writing and/or performance prompts/tasks to meet the needs of all their students. Participants explore ways to planning for and support writing into lessons as well as provide meaningful feedback to students, based on student data.

Social Studies Practice: Comparison and Contextualization

Historical Thinking Skill: Sourcing

Preparation includes:

Bringing samples of student data and writing for at a current group/class of students

Whole Group:

  • Focusing on best practices for the synthesis work that comes before formally writing for an audience
  • Creating informational writing pieces such as a graphic novel page or a political cartoon (creating a culture for learning in a risk-free environment)
  • Identifying self- and/or peer- assessment strategies for showing evidence of understanding of key concepts and content in a variety of writing formats
  • Determining ways to provide students with feedback to push their thinking and writing
  • Professional reading TBD

Grade band break-out sessions:

  • Delving deeper into the day’s learning
  • Planning for implementing and sharing back to the school and teacher teams
