Event description

Description

Since it was first launched in 2014, the Social Progress Index (SPI) has compared nations on issues of safety, health, education, environmental quality, and inclusiveness. As of 2018, the US ranks just 25th in social progress.

And as the 2018 Social Progress Index for the 50 US States reveals, California ranks 33rd out of 50 states, a remarkably poor result for the largest economy in the country and fifth-largest in the world. These results underline the need for a more detailed assessment of the quality of life in California.

Social Progress Imperative leadership and staff will visit the Central Valley Community Foundation on March 25th as they roll out the new SPI for CA counties. This new scorecard takes a more focused, contextualized look at what is driving California’s low performance. The findings provide a roadmap to improve prioritization and address the specific needs of communities across the state.

Social Progress Imperative CEO Michael Green, US Director Justin Edwards, and Sr. US Data Analyst Dustin Davis will walk us through how they measure social progress around the globe, what this data shows about California’s counties, and how it can help drive conversations about how we build a state that works for all.

About the Social Progress Imperative:
The Social Progress Index is an initiative of the Social Progress Imperative, a Washington DC-based 501(c)(3) organization exclusively focused on redefining how the world measures success, putting things that matter to people’s lives at the top of the agenda. Established in 2012 with support through initial investments by the Skoll Foundation, Avina Foundation, Cisco, Deloitte and others, the Social Progress Imperative strives to improve the lives of people around the world by fostering research and knowledge sharing on social progress and using data to catalyze action. Its robust, holistic measurement tool—the Social Progress Index—captures how well a society provides its people with the things they really care about, including health, safety, shelter, education, rights and freedom. The economic measures our world relies on only tell half the story. The Social Progress Index tells the other half, equipping leaders in business, government and civil society with a common language of inclusive development and new tools to guide their initiatives.
