Description

Goals and Objectives:

The digital world offers youth a powerful sense of connection and identity- two critical aspects of development. Facebook, twitter, instagram and more enable youth to say, act and make rapid choices that can have long term effects. The youth of today have opportunities to use this new domain for good or for bad, in a situation where the digital world can seem like what Dr. Ron Taffel has called a second family. We need to not only acknowledge but compete with this second family to keep having a positive influence on our childrens' lives. What can we do?

Based on up to date research, this presentation will look at what parents, teachers and helping professionals can do to helpfully engage youth in positive dialogue and reflection about social media and their citizenship in the digital world

Parents will:

  • Learn how to keep children and themselves safe while helping each other as digital citizens

  • Determine if social media responsible for mean and cruel behavior

  • Understand how youth see via social media and how it impacts behavior such as sexting and the choices they make?

  • Learn what youth themselves identify as support they would want from adults as opposed to what actions they identify as unsupportive
