We invite you to participate the first Social Justice Game Jam.
Every year 53% of the low-income households in Washington face at least one civil legal problem without adequate legal assistance. Problems can range from predatory lending to foreclosure to various kinds of debt. There are many legal advocates helping those in need, however due to the difference in numbers not everyone gets the help they need.
This is where you come in. The Social Justice Game Jam is on of the first game jams aimed at creating games that address this problem. In this event, we will be bringing together game developers and legal advocates to collaborate and create games that either directly teach skills or educate the public about current issues.
Once you have registered here on Eventbrite head over to the jam page here on itch.io. As much as possible we are going to use that as a platform to manage the games.
After that hop over and join our Slack channel. It will be used pretty much all communications. Prior to the event, we will be using it to keep people posted about updates and allow people to get to know each other ahead of time. During the Jam we will use it for announcements, meal calls, and anything else that comes up.
Finally, check out our Facebook event. We don’t plan on putting any updates there that don’t also appear in Slack but it’s an easy way to see who is coming and keep track of updates before the event starts if you don’t use Slack in your day to day life.

Respect the other attendees, the volunteers, and the venue, if there is an issue or something breaks please let someone in charge know.
The theme for this event is social justice and civil legal aid, we want games that in some way promote awareness of or address some of the issues.
Some examples of issues include:
- Debt Repayment
- Wage Theft
- Veteran's Benefits
- Fraud and Predatory Lending
A few game and game-like applications that are good guidelines.
It's completely ok if you don't have any background knowledge on any of these issues. There will be legal professionals participating in this jam that will be able to bring you up to speed. In addition, there will be some pre-event planning going on in Slack.
For those of you who prefer you games analog instead of digital we have you covered too, we will be providing materials for you to create your board or card games.
