Event description

Description

This class is offered live in person only. Due to the structure of the class, our online interactive stream is not available.

Class Description

This training is provided in two parts. Session 1 is required for attendance of Session 2.

This training series will educate participants how to better serve the trans community by explaining culturally responsible language, discussing trans experiences, and providing tools to address disenfranchisement. Sessions will also offer the opportunity to practice skills in group conversations, learning activities, and example case studies so they may better empower the trans people we serve.

As the number of transgender people accessing human services increases, so must our ability to serve them. The transgender community is disproportionately impacted by homelessness, poverty, and violence with severe obstacles to resources. This is compounded upon by systematic oppression, pathologization, institutional disenfranchisement, and a lack of education among providers. In order to foster affirming, inclusive services we must obtain an understanding the community’s unique needs and the barriers that prevent them from being met.

Presenter

JAC Stringer, MSW, LGSW is a trans, disabled, Native American activist and social worker. He has worked as a community organizer, educator, and service provider for over fifteen years with a focus on the transgender and LGBTQPIA community and the needs of at-risk youth. In 2008, he founded the Midwest’s first regional trans health organization Heartland Trans Wellness Group, where he served as Executive Director for eight years. During this time he became an internationally known educator on trans activism, human services, and program development. He is committed to servant leadership and has a strong passion for radical community building. As a therapist, JAC uses social justice as an avenue to build trauma informed safer spaces where people feel supported, validated, and heard.
