Event Details

The Social Enterprise Boot Camp 2010 will bring together aspiring and practicing social entrepreneurs from diverse disciplines such as public policy, nonprofit management, international development, social work, and education to fill the gap in the convergence of private and public sectors. The Boot Camp will feature:

  • Intensive skill-building workshops taught by leading social entrepreneurs
  • Elevator Pitch Competition
  • Speed Networking

Skill-building Workshops

Speakers from leading non-profits and social enterprises will lead small-group, interactive workshops on: business planning, financial planning, measuring and communication impact, strategic business development and partnership, legal structures, and marketing and communication. The workshops will primarily target non-business school students and young professionals who wish to gain entrepreneurial experience and other relevant tools to either start their own social ventures or improve existing ones.

Elevator Pitch Competition

The participants will have a chance to pitch their business ideas and receive feedback from judges representing the following organizations: Echoing Green, Endeavor, Khunu, and the Unreasonable Institute. Prizes will be awarded to competitors based on the best business idea and the most effective pitch.

Speed Networking

Open to a larger audience, this fast-paced event will provide incredible networking opportunities for aspiring and practicing social entrepreneurs. Grouped by sectors such as health, education, and technology, attendees will meet others with similar interests with 5 minutes to talk to each of them. Speed Networking will be followed by a general reception for more in-depth conversation.

As a collaborative effort between Net Impact from School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University, Bridge from Wagner School of Public Services at NYU, and entrepreneurshipEdge, the Boot Camp will take place over 2 days on Friday, November 12th at NYU and Saturday, November 13th at Columbia.

Please note that this registration page is for those who are planning to attend the Social Enterprise Boot Camp, which includes admission to Speed Networking. If you are interested in Speed Networking only, please visit http://se-speednetworking.eventbrite.com/.

Organizer

SIPA Net Impact, Bridge at NYU, and School of Visual Arts

SIPA Net Impact focuses on building and supporting an active network of people at SIPA and the larger Columbia community who are interested and involved in Corporate Social Responsibility, Social Entrepreneurship, and Sustainability. We organize events including lectures, panels, discussion forums, workshops and brownbag lunches and drive curriculum development that furthers Net Impact-related fields as an area of academic focus at SIPA. We also provide networking and social events for members and support professional development activities including career fairs, and events with other Net Impact chapters.

Bridge is a student and professional group at NYU's Wagner School of Public Service that seeks to connect students and professionals working and interested in social entrepreneurship and innovation. We believe that innovative solutions to entrenched social problems lie at the intersection of the public, private and non-profit sectors. We provide members opportunities to connect with students, academics and professionals in this space, learn about innovative approaches in the field through discussions and hands on experience, and develop professional skills that will help prepare them for a successful career in social innovation.

The MFA in Design for Social Innovation at SVA prepares students to apply the principles and ethics of social innovation as filters for understanding and as a discipline for engaging with and improving the world through design. Graduates of the program will be more than graphic designers, filmmakers, advertising creative directors or interactive systems designers. They will be all these, mastering all the skills and knowledge of how to apply them to have a positive impact on business, society and their own lives.
