How can you support youth voice? Social emotional learning competencies can help students learn the skills to help them in school and life

About this event

Students are an important voice in the work of making a more positive school culture. We cannot do this work without them. Their opinions, thoughts, beliefs, and actions can inform the direction of the school improvement efforts. As a system, you must decide how student voice can be included. Many times, it begins with providing students access and permission to participate meaningfully during planning, training, implementation, and evaluation. Students know more about the day to day interactions between students in the building than the adults do. That knowledge is priceless in helping you reach your goals of a positive school culture. They see the issues from their vantage point and that can be helpful to understand different perspectives.

In this professional development session, educators will learn how to support student voice through:

  • Create engaging environments
  • Affective and cognitive aspects of education
  • Push back on non-inclusive narratives
  • Provide opportunity to practice skills in real world environments
  • Make sure curriculums reflect student population- Do they see themselves?

As an added bonus, you will receive access to a google doc with more tools to develop your every day practices and active skill building for SEL.

Your workshop facilitator, Jennifer Rogers, PhD, LPC, will provide you with relevant research in the field combined with practical applications to develop strategies that work for YOU. You will learn strategies to add to your toolbox when working with children and adolescents to start the school year off. The tools can be adapted to be used in distance learning, hybrid, or face-to-face educational environments.

Previous attendees’ evaluations of Dr. Rogers' workshops:

"That was the most informational hour and a half I've had in a while! Thank you so much!"

"I really appreciated how much time, effort and excitement you bring to SEL. It is so important to myself, my students, and their futures!"

"I really appreciate this quick yet extremely helpful zoom call."

"Thank you for understanding where we are with all of this craziness and giving us tools to help us succeed!"
