Event description

Description

The Center for the Study of Race and Democracy in partnership with the Provost’s Office of Inclusion and Community Engagement will inaugurate an annual Social Cohesion Dialogue. Two critically acclaimed authors Carol Anderson (‘White Rage: The Unspoken Truth of Our Racial Divide’) and Sarah Smarsh (‘Heartland: A Memoir of Working Hard and Being Broke in the Richest Country on Earth’) will engage in a dialogue on critical issues of race, class and gender.

In preparation, we invite ASU communities to participate in one of a series of reading and discussion groups co-facilitated by ASU faculty and university leaders. Each group will meet once for two hours at a selected time and place in January or February. Groups will be hosted across ASU and all participants will be provided with books.

Participants will have the choice to read one or both books as part of their participation.

The reading and discussion groups are free and open to ASU faculty, staff and students

Notes to keep in mind before completing your registration:

  • By signing up for a reading group, you are committing to reading one or both books and to attending the reading group session. The reading group session must be attended in person and is required as part of the participation in this program.

  • All participants will be given the option to read one or both books, and both books will be provided to you free of charge. For faculty and staff, books will be mailed via campus mail and for students, we can arrange for pick-up or for mail to your home.

You are registering for the Tempe Campus Reading Group scheduled for Friday, February 1st from 10:00AM-Noon in West Hall 120 at the Tempe Campus. The facilitators for this group are Scott Brooks, Associate Professor in the Sanford School of Family Dynamics and Carol McNamara, Associate Director for the School of Civic and Economic Thought and Leadership.
