Intended to celebrate, inspire and support businesses across the region, SoCal Business Development Conference 2019 gathers entrepreneurs and business professionals from across the region to exchange ideas, resources, connections and inspiration.

It will feature our Business Superstars Panel where business professionals: CEO's, Presidents, and Upper Management discuss and reflect about their experience on the path to success. The lunch panel will be moderated by Victor Parker, Los Angeles District, Director, Small Business Administration. 

The event will also feature procurement and speed matchmaking sessions designed to bring business owners together with corporate and government procurement representatives. Public agencies and large corporations will share tips and strategies on how to best navigate their procurement processes and land a small business contract. 

Sandy Cajas President of the Regional Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, states, “Procurement is our passion. Our goal is simple, to expand procurement opportunities for SoCal businesses".

Procurement and business development manager with 25 years of experience in public sector economic development programs, the past 14 leading the City of Long Beach’s Harbor Department Small Business Enterprise Programs from its origins to a perennially successful champion for small business utilization.

Miriam Scott Long
Metro
Diversity and Economic Development Department 

 Miriam Scott Long, “Mimi”, is the Director of Strategic Business and Construction Career Services with Metro’s Diversity and Economic Development Department. She serves as small business advocate and inclusion specialist, with an impressive background as bond analyst on Wall Street, a former Deputy County Supervisor and Deputy Mayor of the City of Los Angeles. 

 Her commitment as a way-shower and community conduit has remained steadfast throughout a vast career. Miriam returned to Metro after a “hero’s journey” where like the stories in mythology, she left her comfort zone to find the “fire” of best practices and brought what she found back to her home, the Los Angeles Metropolitan Transportation Authority. She has a reputation for developing new ways to inform and include. She draws from other aspects of the work world, focused on youth, seniors, women and the disenfranchised. The journey resulted in bringing a myriad of connections, relationships and insight to her responsibility, serving as a system navigator for construction careers and small business programs outreach. 

 Miriam is a graduate of USC in Public Administration and Princeton University Woodrow Wilson School of Public Policy. She hails from a very small town called Lakin, West Virginia, and attended boarding school in the North Carolina. She enjoys travel, gardening, fishing and basketball, and considers service to be her highest calling.

 

Carmen Bermudez-Bracy
Southern California Water District 

 Mrs. Bermudez-Bracy currently serves as the Contract Compliance Accountability Administrator and Small Business Certification Officer for the Business Outreach Section at Metropolitan Water District of Southern California. MWD is the nation’s largest water wholesale serving 19 million Southern California residents. The Business Outreach Program provides services to maximize contracting opportunities for regional, disabled veterans and small business owners in the Southland six counties that Metropolitan services. As MWD’s certification officer and as an advocate for small business owners, she provides important information about the benefits of certification and regional incentives and business networking. In her role as Contract Compliance Administration for Small Business Entities, MWD’s CCAP program tracks the compliance of using small businesses in construction contracts and professional agreements. MWD’s Contract Compliance Accountability Program has set benchmarks in the industry. Carmen has a Master’s Degree in Business Administration and Leadership from the University of La Verne.


Jermaine Carter-Gibson
State of California General Services

Jermaine currently serves as an Outreach Liaison and SB/SB-PW/DVBE Advocate with the California Department of General Services, Procurement Division, Certification and Outreach Branch. In this role, he educates business owners about the benefits and opportunities of pursuing a Small Business (SB) certification, Disabled Veteran Business Enterprise (DVBE) certification, and contracts with the State of California. Jermaine previously worked at Verizon Wireless as a trainer and sales manager. His background is in training, management, marketing, and employee development. He holds a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Marketing from Sacramento State University.


Jennnifer Trotter
Burns & McDonnell

Ms. Trotter is a the Business Diversity California Manager and Senior Public Involvement Specialist for Burns & McDonnell, an infrastructure services firm and general contractor. In this role, she leads the public involvement and supplier diversity initiatives throughout California. Ms. Trotterhas previously held key roles in the public, non-profit, and private sectors.  Prior to joining the Burns & McDonnell team shewas the Executive Director of the Los Angeles County Community Development Foundation (CDF), non-profit arm of the County of Los Angeles Housing Authority. She has also held posts with the Los Angeles County Community Development Commission; Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF), a national civil rights non-profit law firm; and eCivis, LLC, an online grants research firm; Tom Bradley Legacy Foundation; and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.


Danielle Lew

Danielle Lew serves as the Marketing & Communications Director for Modern Times, Inc (MTI), a consulting firm which certified DBE/SBE/MBE based in Los Angeles. She oversees all marketing and events-related activities for nationwide projects.  She has over ten years of experience in the marketing and special event industries, including working for lifestyle brands and producing events from 50-1000+ guests, managing sponsors, building relationships with numerous vendors, and marketing special events for clients.

Currently, Danielle is the Small Business Outreach Manager on the LINXS (LAX Integrated Express Solutions) Inclusivity team - LINXS is the team responsible for the design, build, finance, operation and maintenance of the Automated People Mover (APM) Project at LAX.

Victor Parker, a California native and long-time member of the Los Angeles community, was appointed District Director of the SBA’s Los Angeles District Office in October, 2011. The Los Angeles District Office serves Los Angeles, Ventura, and Santa Barbara counties. As District Director, he is responsible for the delivery of SBA programs and services to aspiring and existing small business owners, SBA lenders and partners, which include business advisory services, capital access programs, entrepreneurial development, international trade development and contract procurement assistance .The Los Angeles District Office territory includes ten Small Business Development Centers, three Service Corps of Retired Executives chapters and four Women’s Business Centers.

Dan Salas founded Harbor Breeze Cruises in 1990. Danny’s love of the ocean began at a young age. He began working at the San Pedro docks at the early age of 12. His fondness of the sea grew stronger as he grew older and he pursued a career as a tug boat captain. After 10 years of working as a tug boat captain Danny was ready to set out on his own. He bought his first boat in 1994 and shortly thereafter gave his first tour. Danny has worked on perfecting his harbor cruise business. He’s hired experienced captains and staff to help his business excel. Today Harbor Breeze Cruises offers more whale watching tours then any other company in the area.

Sal Ramirez as a first generation of an immigrant family into the U.S., established Alpha Professional Resources, A.P.R., Inc., DBA: AlphaProTemps, where he became a co-owner and President/CEO of this firm for the last 25 years, providing Staff Augmentation Solutions. Leading the firm with the day to day operations, getting involved with the community and building new relationships is something he enjoys.
 
 

Roland Cordero

Roland Cordero founded Diverse Janitorial, a construction clean-up contractor, in Burbank, California, in 2009. At that time the focus was residential properties; today the company's commercial projects include airports, UCLA, Grossmont College, University of Riverside, LA Metro, and industrial facilities. A recent project near LAX was the Division 16 Southwestern Yard Project.

In 2016 Roland received the Top Latino Business Award from the Los Angeles Business Journal. He also received the Excellence in Entrepreneurship Award from the Orange County Business Journal in 2019.

Roland’s five-year plan is to expand the company’s services throughout California. The company hires low-income employees and disadvantaged workers in order to improve the community and expand economic opportunity for as many people as possible.
 
 
Jorge Leandros Tovar

Jorge started his professional career in the United States Marine Corps, where he acquired discipline and leadership skills which endured to further his career goals. After graduating from East Los Angeles College in 2003 with education in Business, Entrepreneurship, and Marketing, he moved on to California State University Long Beach. While attending CSULB, Jorge found he was a natural Geography and decided to take that career path and graduated in 2007. After many unsuccessful attempts at the “working world”, and re-discovering his true passion, Jorge went off on his own to pursue his own business goals which he kept unfulfilled for many years. In July of 2014 Jorge founded Tovar Geospatial Services. In 2018 after many years working to get his business “off the ground” he is finally becoming successful at his life long goal to become the owner of a growing business.
