Snitch Hunt
Event Information
Description
Take on the role of an intelligence analyst, wade through the metadata, and track down the whistleblower!
This event highlights the significance of metadata surveillance in the digital age, and the chilling effect of mass surveillance on our freedoms.
The scenario: a whistleblower has been working with a journalist to inform the public of corporate wrongdoings. You and your team will be given a set of metadata to analyse, with one simple task: identify the journalist's source, so they can be brought to "justice". Through this you will get first-hand experience of what metadata is, and how much it can reveal.
The Snitch Hunt is open to all people, and no technical skills are required to participate. If you can work a web browser, you can hunt snitch!
Lunch will be provided.
Sponsors: Platypus Initiative, Cryptoparty Sydney, Hack for Privacy, Department of Computing and Information Systems (University of Melbourne), Blueprint for Free Speech, ThoughtWorks.
