Colby and Nicholas, an idealistic young couple expecting their first child, are forced to come to terms with the possibility that the happy future they have planned may be anything but. They are suddenly faced with the fact that their firstborn only vaguely resembles a human at all. As their child – this Smudge of a thing – causes havoc on the world around them questions are raised about the limits of their love, the definition of family, and the lengths to which they will go to preserve both. “Smudge” is a dark horror-comedy exploring love, family, and what happens when the American Dream becomes a nightmare.
Under the direction of Harold Gervais, the show stars Nicole Rae, Andy Niemann, and Richard Mayer. With sets and lighting design by Dan Zimmer, sound design by Michael Harkins and assistant direction by Rebecca Meyers. Rachel Axler is a television writer and playwright, winner of two Primetime Emmy Awards for her work on “The Daily Show.”
"Creepy and funny. Precise and imaginative. Parenthood never looked weirder or more terrifying than it does in ‘Smudge’.” -Rachel Saltz, New York Times
"for signs of intelligent life in the theatrical universe, I nearby refer you to “Smudge,” Rachel Axler's pitch- black comedy. “ -Marilyn Stasio, Variety
