Stereoscopic and higher resolution content are finding wider use in today’s digital media workflow from content capture, ingest, editing and post production, content delivery as well as archive and preservation. There is also a growing trend toward the use of network storage rather than direct attached storage for many performance-oriented M&E applications as the capabilities of storage networks has improved and costs have dropped.  This has also enabled collaborative video workflows dependent upon the distribution of video content through the “cloud.”  The development of the digital storage hierarchy to support these activities has led to the use of many types of storage devices including high capacity hard disk drives, performance hard disk drives, optical discs and magnetic tape.

Flash memory is emerging as another layer in the professional media storage hierarchy, particularly in rugged content capture devices as well as in high performance content delivery systems. In this SMPTE PDA Now educational webcast, our guest speaker Coughlin Associates' Tom Coughlin will provide an overview of these technologies and where they may best apply. In addition, some results from a recently completed survey of M&E professionals conducted by Coughlin Associates will be presented and compared to the 2009 SMPTE storage survey, to show current status and developing trends in this highly demanding and storage intensive industry.

For the past 100 years, the people of the Society of Motion Pictures and Television Engineers (SMPTE, pronounced “simp-tee”) have sorted out the details of many significant advances in entertainment technology, from the introduction of “talkies” and color television to HD and UHD (4K, 8K) TV. Since its founding in 1916, the Society has earned an Oscar® and multiple Emmy® Awards for its work in advancing moving-imagery education and engineering across the communications, technology, media, and entertainment industries. The Society has developed thousands of standards, recommended practices, and engineering guidelines, more than 800 of which are currently in force.

SMPTE’s global membership today includes 7,000 members, who are motion-imaging executives, engineers, creative and technology professionals, researchers, scientists, educators, and students. A partnership with the Hollywood Professional Association (HPA®) connects SMPTE and its membership with the professional community of businesses and individuals who provide the expertise, support, tools, and infrastructure for the creation and finishing of motion pictures, television programs, commercials, digital media, and other dynamic media content. Information on joining SMPTE is available at
