Join music educators, ethnomusicologists, and guest artists as we gather in person to celebrate global and local culture at West Virginia University for a weeklong in-person professional development course, June 26-30, 2023. Lead faculty will return this summer along with an expanded group of Guest Faculty-Artists for WVU's Smithsonian Folkways Certificate Course in World Music Pedagogy. Daily workshops will feature the music of Appalachia, Ghana, and Northeast Brazil along with sessions featuring musical traditions of Mexilachia, Trinidad, Lebanese Darbuka drumming, and Andean sikuriadas. Principles and practices of world music pedagogy will be at the center of demonstrations and conversations throughout the week as we consider pathways promoting culturally sensitive, diverse, and inclusive music curricula in K-12, university, and community music settings. Register now and join us in the mountains of West Virginia.
