About this Event

Smart Trips Austin and Ghisallo Cycling Initiative invite you to this free class on beginning city cycling. Whether you've been wanting to start biking to work, the pool, or just around your neighborhood, this hands on class will help you get ready to start riding on city streets.

Participants must be 18 years or older to be a part of the class.

WHAT TO EXPECT

8:30 am - 9:00 am | Breakfast and Basic Safety Check

We will have coffee and breakfast tacos waiting for you so please show up early to enjoy an easy Sunday breakfast with us. We will have air pumps with us if you need to fill up your tires and we'll also do a basic safety check to make sure your bike is good to go for the class.

9:00 am - 10:00 am | On-Course Lesson

We'll go over ABCD quick check and how to adjust your seat height. We'll practice starting and stopping safely and confidently as well as signaling verbally and with body motions. We'll learn how to handle our bikes, scan for cars, and practice giving each other enough space when riding in a group.

10:00 am - 10:05 am | Break

10:05 am - 11:00 am | Riding on the Road

We'll go on a group ride together through the neighborhood where you'll be able to practice your new skills such as safe passing, staying clear of the door zone, where to position yourself on the road and using your gears depending on the slope of the road. The route will also include a portion on bike lanes and trails. We'll end the ride back at Harris Elementary where you can ask any questions or share any comments on the experience.

WHAT TO BRING:

Please bring your bike in good working condition. If you need a bike please request one at check out and tell us your height. This will help us determine what size bike you need.

Wearing a helmet is required. Please bring your helmet if you have one. If not, don't worry we will have a few available for you to borrow. Also, please bring a water bottle. We'll have a cooler for refills.

We're excited to meet you and help you get started on your biking goals! If you have any questions please call us at 512-782-2151 or emails us at info@SmartTripsAustin.org
