Event description

Description

Austin Museum Day is one of the great things Austinites look forward to each fall. This year, forty-five museums in the greater Austin area will welcome visitors with special programming, including guided exhibition tours, hands-on activities, and more, for visitors of all ages. With only a limited amount of time, it’s hard to see it all, but we're going to do our best to check them out this Sunday. Of course, with 30,000 people expected to participate, it might be a little easier if we leave our cars at home....

MAKE IT A TRANSIT ADVENTURE! Capital Metro, in partnership with Smart Trips Austin, is providing free Local Day Passes so you can spend more time exploring museums than parking lots!

12:30 PM | MUSEUM VISITS | This is your adventure! Three of our region's premiere museums are huddled together just north of the Capitol. We recommend checking out all three museums if you can:

>>> 12:30 PM | BOB BULLOCK TEXAS STATE HISTORY MUSEUM is a division of the Texas State Preservation Board with a mission to tell "the Story of Texas." The museum has three floors of interactive exhibits; the first floor theme is "land," the second floor theme "identity," and the third floor theme "opportunity." Special programming includes: a rodeo-themed photo booth; sing along to songs about ranches and rodeos with the Groundwork Music Project; make mini cowboy prints with Smudge Studios; join the Austin Public Library Foundation's Badgerdog Creative Writing Program to write an original song inspired by Rodeo! The Exhibition; and see the rodeo come to life with a performance of YIPPE YAY! in the Texas Spirit Theater.

>>> 1:30 PM | BLANTON MUSEUM OF ART is one of the foremost university art museums in the country and has the largest and most comprehensive collection of art in Central Texas. Special exhibits on display include: Vincent Valdez: The City; Framing Eugène Atget: Photography and Print Culture in Nineteenth-Century Paris; and Wangechi Mutu: The End of eating Everything.

>>> 2:30 PM | HARRY RANSOM CENTER is an internationally renowned humanities research library and museum at The University of Texas at Austin, with an affiliation with the Smithsonian Institute. Special exhibits on display include: Ed Ruscha: Archaeology and Romance; Stories to Tell: Selections from the Harry Ransom Center; The Gutenberg Bible; and The First Photograph.

3:35 PM | RETURN TO M STATION | 2231 Guadalupe/West Mall UT (Stop #1042) | #20 MetroBus

4:00 PM | END OF EVENT | Capital Metro staff can help you end your tour earlier (or later), if needed.
