Event description

Description

Living in Central East Austin means more than sitting on your front porch, walking down to East 6th Street or taking a bike ride along Boggy Creek -- it also means having the entire city of Austin at your fingertips! Whether you're headed downtown to visit City Hall, to study at the new Central Library or just to kick it on the weekend -- downtown Austin has a lot to offer, unless you are looking for a parking spot.

MAKE IT A SMART TRIP! Capital Metro, Smart Trips Austin, and the Blackshear Prospect Hill Neighborhood Association invite you for a stroll downtown with a free Transit Day pass -- so you can spend more time exploring what TIME Magazine has recognized as "One of the World's Greatest Places" and less time circling Seaholm for parking!

*******************************************************

6:00 PM | CHECK-IN | Join us *in the lobby* of the Carver Library to get oriented to the Capital Metro system and make our way to downtown Austin together.

6:15 PM | CATCH CAP METRO | 1422 Rosewood/Angelina (Stop #3730) | #2 MetroBus -- every 15 minutes until 8 PM, 7 days a week!

6:25 PM | 2ND STREET ADVENTURE | We'll start our tour at Republic Square Park -- the heart of Austin's transit network -- and point out notable sites along the 2ND Street District, including Austin City Hall, the Willie Nelson Statue, Google Fiber, Austin Central Library, the Butterfly Bridge, Seaholm District and more!

6:35 PM | AUSTIN CENTRAL LIBRARY | Located in the Seaholm EcoDistrict, a vibrant hub of residential, office and community gathering spaces that reflect Austin’s spirit of originality and soul, was recognized by TIME Magazine as one of "World's Greatests Places." The books —500,000 in total—are just the beginning of the story. There’s also an art gallery, an event space, a rooftop butterfly garden, a series of group-study rooms, a café (featuring several cookbook-inspired meals) and a “technology petting zoo,” which enables visitors to toy with next-generation gadgets, like a 3-D printer. Join us for a walk across the 2ND Street District and over the "Butterfly Bridge" to our flagship Central Library! Catch a glimpse of the new building, which earned a Platinum LEED certification for its sustainable design, which includes a bicycle-repair and parking garage and a cistern on the roof that pipes rainwater to the bathrooms.

7:25 PM | TOY JOY | has been keeping Austin fun since 1987. Known for it's floor to ceiling eclectic collection of fun, nostalgic and quirky toys and gifts, Toy Joy isn't your typical children's toy store -- carrying a mind-boggling array of products appropriate for anyone, whether for a newborn or the kid-at-heart. While you're there, pay a visit to Yummi Joy Candy Store, featuring Sweet Ritual Dairy-Free Ice Cream, Artisan Fudge, Pick and Mix Candy, Nostalgic Candy with vegan, non-gmo, no high fructose corn syrup, gluten free, gelatin free options PLUS handrafted coffee beverages and more!

7:50 PM | RETURN TRIP | 5th/Guadalupe (Stop #2112) | #2 MetroBus / 7:51 PM / 8:06 PM / 8:28 PM

8:00 PM | END OF EVENT | Capital Metro staff can help you end your tour earlier (or later), if needed.
