Description

UCI Transportation is offering the League of American Bicyclists two-day Smart Cycling class (previously known as Traffic Skills 101), teaching essential cycling skills:

  • Bicycle Safety Checks
  • Flat Repair
  • Bike Handling
  • Crash Avoidance Skills
  • Riding legally in traffic

Recommended for adults and teens aged 18 and older, this fast-paced, two part course teaches cyclists the principles of bicycle driving.

All participants will receive a League of American Bicyclists "Smart Cycling" student manual ($20 value), Bike Helmet, Multi-Tool, and "Smart Cycling" certificate upon successful completion of the skill-testing and online examinations. This class is being offered for free ($75 value) to UCI students, faculty, staff, and immediate family members. Don't miss this fantastic opportunity to become more confident while riding!

Course Overview: Part 1 of 2 - Classroom Session

Date: Tuesday 11/5/2019

Time: 5:30pm - 8:30pm

Location: UCI Division of Continuing Education (DCE)

The classroom lecture covers bicycle law, gear, basic mechanics, and more. This session is held on Tuesday evening prior to the "on-bike" training on Saturday. Even if you have been riding bikes your whole life, you will learn something new. Part 1 will be held from 5:30pm to 8:30pm at DCE.

No bike is required. Dinner will be provided.

Course Overview: Part 2 of 2 - On-Bike Session

Date: Saturday 11/9/2019

Time: Check in 7:45-8:00, Class 8:00am - 1:30pm

Location: Parking Lot 1C

Prerequisite: Part 1 - Classroom Session

Part 2 covers bike handling skills in a closed parking lot and a bike ride through Irvine allowing participants to practice their cycling skills in small groups under the watchful eyes of UCI's League of American Bicyclists-trained League Cycling Instructors (LCIs), and an online examination. The On-Bike session will be held from 8:00am – 1:30pm. Please bring your bike, helmet, water, and snacks. Meet promptly at Lot 1C to get checked in.

Prior to this course, participants must take their bicycle to the campus bike shop for a complimentary safety inspection. Mechanical issues have caused delays to our class in the past. Don't let it be you!

Complete Part 1, Part 2, and the online exam to earn your League of American Bicyclists Smart Cycling Certificate!

At this time we are only able to accommodate UCI students, faculty, and staff and their immediate family members age 18 and over. More classes will be offered in the future. Please feel free to email biking@uci.edu with any questions or comments. We look forward to seeing you in Smart Cycling!
