About the Small Business Financial Management Program

The purpose of The Small Business Financial Management Program is to provide small business owners and entrepreneurs considering establishing a small business with a basic understanding of the financial aspects of running a small business. But honestly, this program is anything but basic.

While small business owners may be well versed in the technical and procedural aspects of their businesses, they often lack sufficient knowledge of the financial aspects of their businesses. As a result, many small businesses fail, not because the small business owner is not a talented practitioner of his or her trade or profession but because he or she is ill-equipped to handle the day-to-day finanical aspects of the business.

When your business is your paycheck, you are working to cover both your business and personal expenses. Your business needs to be structured, right from the beginning, to provide for the lifestyle you aspire to and deserve to have as well as provide opportunities for growth and profitability for your stakeholders, bankers, and investors.

According to a U.S. Bank study, a whopping 82% of businesses that fail do so because of cash flow problems. Cash flow is not just the amounts of money that are coming in and out of the business, it is also the timing that must be taken into account as well. Having an adequate amount of working capital and access to capital greatly impacts a business financially with a ripple affect flowing right into a business owners personal finances! A modest 27% of businesses surveyed by the National Association of Small Business claimed that they weren't able to receive the funding they needed. For those 1-in-4 businesses, the most frequent primary impact that a lack of funding had was preventing business owners from growing their business.

The curriculum provides systematic training for small business owners and new and aspiring entrepreneurs. The course does not have any pre-requisites. For this training, we define small business as a business consisting of a single individual to one with as many as twenty employees. While other small businesses may also benefit from this training, the materials, examples and exercises have been developed for businesses consisting of one to twenty employees.
