About this event

Every year Write About Now sends a poet to represent the city of Houston and Write About Now at the Women of the World Poetry Slam Festival. Women of the World Poetry Slam Qualifier

How does it work?

This is a poetry slam that will consist of 4 rounds of competition at varying time lengths.

Competition begins with each of the 16 competitors randomly selecting a number to determine their order.

After performing, poets will be scored on a scale from 0-10 by 5 random judges in the audience. The high and low scores will be dropped to prevent bias and the middle three numbers will be combined to give the poet their score for that round.

If the poet goes over time for their round, they will receive a half point time penalty. The poet will then receive an additional penalty of .5 points for every 10 seconds they go over (we round down).

Poets may only use their own original works. No props. No fire or animal acts. No musical accompaniment other than music the poets can make with their own body. These rules exist for a reason. Breaking these rules will result in automatic disqualification.

First Round

All 16 poets will perform in the first round. In the first round, each competitor will have 1 minute with a 10 second grace period to perform an original work of poetry.

The poets will be divided into brackets of four poets each based on the number they pulled from the random draw.

Bracket One: Poets 1-4

Bracket Two: Poets 5-8

Bracket Three: Poets 9-12

Bracket Four: Poets 13-16

To advance to the second round, poets will need to have one of the top two highest scores in their bracket of 4. After the first round, there will be an elimination of 8 poets while the winning 8 poets advance to the second round.

Second Round

All of the poets enter this round with a clean slate, meaning all of the scores from the first round are erased. The 8 poets who advance to the second round will perform in the reverse order from their order in the first round. In the second round, each poet will have 2 minutes with a 10 second grace period to perform an original work of poetry.

The poets will be divided into brackets of four poets based on their new order.

Bracket One: Poets 1-4

Bracket Two: Poets 5-8

To advance to the third round, poets will need to have one of the top two highest scores in their bracket of four from the second round. After the second round, there will be an elimination of 4 poets while the winning 4 poets advance to the third round.

Third Round

All poets enter this round with a clean slate, meaning all of the scores from the second round are erased. The 4 poets who advance to the third round will also perform in the fourth round of the competition. There will be a second random draw to determine the order. In the third round, each poet will have 3 minutes with a 10 second grace period to perform an original work of poetry.

Fourth Round

All four poets, as well as their scores from the third round, advance to the fourth round. Poets will perform in the reverse order from their order in the third round. In the fourth round, each poet will again have 3 minutes with a 10 second grace period to perform an original work of poetry.

All scores from the fourth round will then be combined with the scores in the third round to determine the winner. To break a tie, scores will be added from the first round. If there is still a tie, scores will be added from the second round. If there is still a tie, poets will go head to head in a winner take all 3:10 round, and instead of scores our 5 judges will each pick who they believe is the winner. The poet with the best of 5 selections will be the winner of the competition and have their entry, flight and accommodations covered at the Women of the World Poetry Slam Festival in March 2022 in Baltimore, Maryland, as well as a feature and send off show the week before the festival at Write About Now on March 23rd , as well as the title Slam Mania III Champion.
