Description

Loa Niumeitolu is a Tongan poet and community organizer. Her work for Pacific Islander people’s self-determination included organizing in the areas of mental health; perinatal health; creative writing; and climate justice. She also co-founded OLO, One Love Oceania, a Pacific Islander queer women’s art performance and activist group. She holds master’s degrees in English and International Development. Some of the topics she will discuss in her lecture are the recent Mauna Kea Protests in the Bay Area, LGBTQ+ Activism in the Bay Area, Women’s Rights within Native American Land Trusts, Queer Polynesian American Experience, Women’s roles in poetry, Polynesians and Pacific Islanders in higher education.
