FRIDAY NIGHT BOOK READING/PUBLIC TALK DESCRIPTION

Friday, April 12

6-8:30PM

Commotion PDX

Join Michelle Cassandra Johnson, author of Skill in Action: Radicalizing Your Yoga Practice to Create a Just World. Michelle will share from her new book and explore the intersection of yoga and justice as an entry into understanding how to create inclusive activist spaces that center healing and resiliency. This is not a yoga class, but will include contemplative practice, journaling, self-reflection and small group discussions. Show up to learn more about yourself and to identify the ways you, uniquely, are inspired to act for justice.

SKILL IN ACTION: RADICALIZING YOUR PRACTICE OF YOGA TO CREATE A JUST WORLD

Commotion PDX

Skill in Action is a workshop designed to explore patterns of oppression, power and privilege, and to respond to the current cultural challenges through practices of self-study, contemplation and collective action.

It can be difficult to remain centered amidst the chaos of a culture that continues to divide and conquer. Many are wondering how to respond to increasingly oppressive policies, political divisions and the current cultural upheaval. While we have questions about how to respond, I believe that we must respond with steadfastness and courageous hearts to the urgent concerns of this time. Contemplative practices, including meditation and yoga, allow us to work with sensation, toxic thought patterns, cultural conditioning, overwhelm, and anxiety through mindfulness and thoughtful care. In this workshop, we will deepen our understanding of the principles of justice and yoga; the workings of power and privilege, oppression and identity, suffering and liberation, and loving kindness.

The most effective tool of White Supremacy is Divide and Conquer. This system of oppression causes us to distance from ourselves and others, leaving us split apart both individually and collectively. Dismantling White Supremacy and systems of oppression requires turning towards, and facing one another. Through the practice of yoga, we can experience personal transformation that allows us to approach one another with honesty, skill and awareness. Through sharing and conversation we will explore the ways White Supremacy and oppression become internalized, and how we, in turn, embody and perpetuate oppression individually and collectively. We will practice asana (postures), meditation, mindfulness, pranayama (breathing), chanting and mantra work to sharpen our goals and visions for our work to change the world. We will will create concrete plans to put our goals into action.

Sliding Scale Offered.

A Quick Guide to our Sliding Scale
We encourage you to read our full thoughts on the sliding scale (below), but here is a very brief rundown, please read the ticket descriptions carefully before you select your ticket:

$275 - Tier 1-Supported Access
$175 - Tier 2-Fair Access
$75 - Tier 3-Rebalance Access

($275) Tier 1-Supported Access is the actual value of this workshop. If you choose a ticket price below the top tier you are receiving a discount. This tier is for those who have enough financial comfort that they can easily afford to pay this cost. If purchasing at this tier does not create significant, or even minimal hardship, then this tier is for you.

($175) Tier 2-Fair Access Paying for this class may qualify as a sacrifice but it would not create severe hardship for you or your family. We offer this price in acknowledgment that paying the full cost may prevent some folks from attending, but that these persons do not honestly find themselves reflected in descriptions for either Tier 1 or Tier 3. If you are struggling to conquer debt or build savings or move away from paycheck to paycheck living but have access to steady income and are not spending most of your time thinking about meeting basic needs such as food, shelter, medical care, child care, etc., you belong here. If you, however, can ask others for financial support, such as family members, partners, or friends, please consider using those personal resources before you use the resources of the sliding scale and limit opportunities for others.

($75) Tier 3-Rebalance Access is for those who are able to meet their basic needs but have little-to-no expendable income, and for whom paying more would create hardship for themselves and/or their family.

Leave a tip If you’d like to offer an additional amount with your ticket reservation, or would like to donate to support further access and scholarship for Michelle’s students, you can leave a tip here. Thank you!

Michelle’s Bio:

I am an author, yoga teacher, social justice activist, licensed clinical social worker and Dismantling Racism trainer. I approach my life and work from a place of empowerment, embodiment and integration. With a deep understanding of trauma and the impact that it has on the mind, body, spirit and heart, much of my work focuses on helping people better understand how power and privilege operate in their life. I explore how privilege, power and oppression affect the physical, emotional, mental, spiritual and energy body.
