Event description

Description

Imagine pulling up on a residential house with fire showing and not being able to keep the fire to the room of origin. Imagine your crew being on video not being able to stretch into the house or force a door. This could happen to any of us in today's video-enabled cell phone society — and be uploaded before you are back at the firehouse. Not practicing basic first-due skills have led to multiple NIOSH reports on firefighter LODDs. The SERF (single engine residential fire) program polishes basic first-due engine company skills for residential fires. It is not reinventing the wheel, but putting excellence into our basic skills we sometimes forget. Whether you run with a volunteer or paid department, you still have to be proficient at first-due engine operations. Throw out politics and staffing guidelines, the truth is we need to be able to do our job professionally as an engine company. An engine company should be able to sustain safe operations for the first 5 to 10 minutes by themselves and then use the help that is on the way.

The First 10 Minutes on the fireground is what determines the eventual outcome. How you as a individual and as a department perform during those cirtical 10 minutes is directly related to prior training and preperation. This Training will focus independely on hose selection, search, forcible entry, ground ladders and ventilation. In todays fire service with many departments being manpower limited both on the career side and volunteer alike, this training will focus on how to complete these critical tasks with a single engine company. This class has been very successful at BGSU fall fire school for the past 7 years and is now available to you in a lecture form presented by Lt. Kevin McFarland, and hosted by the Fremont Firefighters Local 328. $50 paid admission gets you a 8 hour lecture, BGSU CEU's, and a box lunch. Doors will open at 8am with seminar starting at 9am.

Lt. Kevin McFarland has served as an instructor at both the Ohio Fire Academy and the Bowling Green State University State Fire School. He is a Lt. and EMT-P with the Violet Township (Ohio) Fire Department. He holds a bachelor's degree in business administration from Otterbein University
