Event description

Workshop Description:

This workshop will unpack the role of documentation of play and inquiry-based learning in the early years. Drawing on leading pedagogies and contemporary thinking, participants will have an opportunity to re-consider their own understandings of the purpose, process, tools and strategies of documentation.Whilst this workshop will be targeted specifically to teachers who work with children aged 3-5, it would also be suitable for teachers of the Early Primary Years who would like to extend their understanding of this important and valuable tool for observing, recording and interpreting learning. The workshop will have a practical and collaborative element; participants will be encouraged to bring samples of their own documentation to share and re-interpret with colleagues.

Participants will:

Work collaboratively to understand how documenting young children's learning can:

•communicate learning to the learning community

•celebrate and share the learning processes of young children

•act as a stimulus for co-constructing inquiry projects with children

•support collaboration and shared meaning making amongst educators

•provide a valuable tool for educators professional development and growth

Audience: Early Years Educators, Leaders and Curriculum Coordinators who have specific responsibility for the Early Years.

For all individuals who would like to deepen their understanding of the way pedagogical documentation in the early years can offer meaningful educational possibilities for educators, families and young children.

Workshop Presenter: Fiona Zinn

Fiona Zinn is an Early Childhood, Primary and Tertiary Educator with over 25 years experience in teaching and leadership within Australia and abroad. She has been a Committee Member of the Reggio Emilia Australia Information Exchange and a PYP Workshop Leader/Curriculum Developer with the International Baccalaureate since 2004. For the past decade, Fiona has lectured at The University of Melbourne as part of the Masters in International Education (International Baccalaureate) and regularly leads pedagogical workshops for teachers around the world.

Since 2005, Fiona has participated in several International and Australian curriculum writing teams. She is currently contracted to the Tasmanian Education Department to design and implement a shared research project titled ‘Refocusing Teaching and Learning in the Early Years’ across 50 Tasmanian Primary Schools and Child and Family Centres.

Fiona’s work finds a resonance with the educational philosophy of Reggio Emilia and also the research that underpins the Positive Psychology movement; she seeks to enhance her educational collaborations drawing on these two philosophies.

Fiona enjoys innovation, building vision and working collaboratively with teachers to re-energise their pedagogy, re-invigorate learning environments and enhance educational possibilities for children.
