This workshop will address the relationship between authentic assessment and student learning. It will provide participants with different tools to use in the classroom for effective formative and summative assessment. It will look at why formative assessment is integral to the planning, teaching and assessing process and how this impacts positively on student learning. It will address the design of an authentic formative assessment tool which addresses all elements of the curriculum, particularly, concepts.

Participants will:
1.Defining formative and summative assessment

  • Define what we mean by formative and summative assessment
  • Understanding the difference between formative and summative assessment
  • Examine the significance of formative assessment for student learning based on key research

2. Different assessment strategies

  • Examine and develop assessment tools that assess various elements of the learning e.g. skills, concepts, knowledge, action
  • Explore and develop assessments that assess levels of understanding (conceptual understanding)
  • Understand the role of student voice (self & peer assessment and reflection) as formative assessment

3. Role of formative assessment

  • Understand the role of formative assessment in process, content and understanding
  • Examine the importance of documenting learning as evidence of learning
  • Explore the formative assessment cycle as a way to improve teacher planning and student learning

4. Differentiation and Assessment

  • The relationship between assessment, teaching and learning
  • Understanding the significance of formative assessment as way to differentiate
  • Weaving formative assessment in daily classroom practice

5. Recording and Reporting of Learning

  • Examining what 'we' value as learning in how we report on student learning
  • Explore ways to reflection on learning using a variety of strategies

Workshop Leader Biography: Andrea Muller

Andrea MULLER is an experienced international teacher, administrator and consultant who has worked in and with many schools throughout New Zealand, Australia, Asia, Middle East and Europe. In these settings, she has had roles that include curriculum coordinator and adviser, and global education program manager. Her current role is consultant and Regional Director of Innovative Global Education. In this role, she works extensively in Asia Pacific and Middle East. Critical to this role is leading and evolving a sustainable model of professional learning. This model involves reviving and designing curriculum frameworks; coaching and mentoring pedagogy in classrooms; reviewing and refining planning, teaching and assessment in both local and international settings. Andrea is a co-author of a recent publication: ‘Taking the Complexity Out of Concepts’ http://www.hbe.com.au/

Early Bird Fee: US$320.00

Registration fee after the 02 November 2018: US$350.00

Registration fee after the 02 January 2019 :US$380.00

Cancellation Policy

Please note that each workshop will proceed based on participant registration. Innovative Global Education will inform you by 02 February 2019 or earlier if the workshop is to be cancelled. If the workshop is cancelled your full payment will be reimbursed. If the workshop is proceeding you will not receive an email.

Workshop Participation

If Innovative Global Education is informed by 02 February, 2019 that a participant is unable to attend the workshop, a full refund will be given. If notification of not being able to participate is after 02 February, 2019 IGE will be unable to refund the registration fee.

If, for any reason, a school needs to either transfer a registered participant to another workshop from the workshop registered or change the name of the participant attending a workshop, Innovative Global Education can make these changes on request from school or participant at any time.
