Event description

Workshop description:

Have you often felt you should do more to strengthen students’ vocabulary than present a list of words relevant to your current topic? And have you ever found yourself telling students to sound out words they are trying to spell or read only to realise they can’t be sounded out? Traditional ways of supporting vocabulary growth, decoding and spelling skills are often compartmentalised and don’t utilise 21st-century teaching approaches.

This workshop will introduce participants to an inquiry based approach to studying the way words are built. Through investigations, participants will be able to uncover that in English spelling, meaning is prioritized over sound, making it far more regular than most of us imagine. Following a structured process to analyze, synthesize and find relationships among words supports agency in critical thinking, vocabulary, reading and spelling, across all subject areas. Learning how and why words such as ‘heal’ and ‘health’ or ‘tractor’ and ‘subtract’ are related empowers students, giving them greater control of their language, literacy and thinking skills.

Participants are extended the opportunity to:

  • deepen their own understanding of how English words are structured

  • use the process of scientific inquiry to learn about word structure and discover for themselves the satisfaction and deep learning that ensues from following an investigation from start to finish

  • understand the power of the morpheme (bases, prefixes and suffixes)

  • be better informed about the complexity of letter-sound relationships

  • discover how word inquiry is transdisciplinary and can strengthen learning in all subject areas, with all students

  • know there is research behind the approach

  • gather practical ideas and tools for implementation in their classroom

This workshop is intended for K-12 educators interested in

  • understanding more about English orthography (our writing system at the word level) and

  • learning about an inquiry based approach to studying word structure

Although many of the examples will come from Elementary they can easily be adapted for Middle or High School. School leaders interested in learning about a school-wide, inquiry based approach to studying word structure should come along.
