Event description

Workshop Descriptor:

This workshop provides an opportunity for educators not only to learn about agency, but also learn through agency. The workshop is designed to model a variety of agency-supportive approaches that help each individual participant assess their own understanding and implementation of agency, as a way to personalize the structure and content of the workshop to match their unique learning needs and preferences. The workshop will include a number of opportunities to allow participants to engage with resources, experts and each other as pathways for deepening their understanding of what agency is, why it is important and how best to implement it in one’s specific role.

Participants will:

- Gain an understanding of why agency is important
- Identify attributes and characteristics of agency-supportive learning
- Deepen their awareness of their thoughts, feelings and beliefs about agency
- Become familiar with approaches other educators, schools and systems use to respect and support agency
- Reflect on agency in the context of their own position
- Establish changes they can make to increase the support of agency for the learners they works with
- Experience first-hand what it feels like to have voice, choice and ownership as a learner

This workshop is suitable for all teachers, leaders, and administrators – anyone who is responsible for supporting the learning of another, regardless of what age the learner is (child or adult), or the specific area of learning. The personalized nature of the workshop allows each individual to create a path that is meaningful and relevant to their specific role, needs and interests.

Workshop Presenter's Biography: Taryn BondClegg

Taryn has been working in education for over ten years and has had the pleasure of teaching in Canada, Kuwait and Vietnam. She has worked in the IB PYP for the past six years, as a classroom teacher and as a PYP Coordinator.

Working with adults as a PYP Coordinator really challenged and changed her perspective of how children should be treated during their time at school. Since this transformational shift in her own philosophy, she has completed a MEd in Humane, Holistic and Alternatives Models of Education and has been sharing her message with other educators through workshops about Student Agency, helping with the development of the Teacher Support Materials for the Enhanced PYP and speaking at the IB Global Conference last year.

Her main areas of interest as an educator are challenging the status quo, shifting the current paradigm of school and advocating for the respect and support of students' agency as learners and as humans. When she’s not fighting the fight for more voice, choice and ownership in students' educational experiences, she is enjoying living and working with her husband in Ho Chi Min City - riding scooters, eating Pho and hiding from the extreme humidity!
