Description

50 Activities for Teaching Scientific Thinking to Grades K to 8

Workshop Descriptor:

Focus 1

How to Invite Students to Inquire into Science

Science is organized curiosity. Curious kids ask questions. With this in mind we teachers must present students with opportunities to be curious. We must create the need to know. I share a dozen adaptable ways we can invite students to inquire into science. There will be ample opportunity to stand up and play with the provocations because we know that to present a provocation with flourish, you want to have mastered the ‘sleight of hand’ tricks.

Focus 2

How to Explicitly Teach Scientific Thinking and Complex Content

Science organizes curiosity using scientific thinking. This thinking can be parsed into separate skills. We must explicitly teach separate scientific thinking skills.

Elementary teachers know that youngsters are wonderful theorists. An elementary curriculum that fosters scientific thinking prepares students well for middle school science and sets a foundation to develop astute problem solvers. Elementary students need these explicit thinking activities to learn a host of fundamental skills such as how to ask scientific vs unscientific questions and how to be good observer, to name just two.

Each of the skills of scientific thinking needs to be introduced formally to students and each skill must be practiced on its own. I share 40+ activities, each designed to explicitly teach one science thinking skill. These thinking skills can be honed in very young students. There will be ample opportunity to stand up and play with the activities so teachers master them and be ready to use them the next week.

Participants will:

Recognize that scientific thinking is not strange and mysterious.

Recognize that it's okay for the teacher not to know every science question asked.

Take away activities that spark curiosity in students of all ages.

Take away activities that develop these important critical thinking skills.

Workshop Leader Biography:

Jane Altemen teaches science to kids in Grade 6 through 12 and runs science clubs for elementary kids. Her chemistry curriculum maps have been published by Heidi Hayes Jacobs. Jane has created 50+ activities useful to elementary and middle school teachers who nurture authentic scientific thinking. The activities work because they are not confounded by tricky science content; they focus only on scientific thinking. Jane has shared these activities at schools around the world, at EARCOS, at the International Convention on Thinking and at IB Conferences. Jane has been a teacher and administrator since 1988 in her native Canada, and in the Middle East, Europe, and now South-East Asia. With a first degree in Neuroscience, Jane’s teaching practice is dominated by Brain-Based Learning coupled with Visible Thinking Routines and the Understanding by Design paradigm.
