This year's event brings Contemporary A Cappella music to the forefront of the Texas music scene with none other than Deke Sharon! In this rich community of choral music in Texas, there is a vastly growing amount of a cappella bursting onto the scene and this year it is all about taking it to the next level! SING! Texas Festival 2018 is designed for vocal music enthusiasts of all ages and styles. No matter if you are just beginning your exploration into contemporary a cappella or you have a rich culture already instilled, SING! Texas Festival 2018 is offering more this year than ever before!

Plan your weekend and travel for Friday, November 16 to Saturday, November 17 so you can take full advantage with an All-Access Pass. Beginning Friday at 1:00 p.m. we have workshops, masterclasses, SING! Festival Chorus (directed by Deke Sharon), a new feature performance for a selected junior high/middle school group, and a high school & collegiate level Scholastic Competition. Continuing on to Saturday we have specialty workshops with Deke Sharon, along with "Aca-Bombs" for our newly established groups, and an unprecedented FIVE workshop sessions offered! Participants will get to plan their classes and attend the areas THEY choose!

If you want ultimate experience to learn from the man himself, sign up to sing in the SING! Festival Chorus! Music will be selected by Deke Sharon and PDFs and digital learning media sent to you starting September 1. Singers should come prepared to make music and a memorable performance for the Saturday Night Spectacular! We'll only have two short rehearsals before soundcheck, so come ready to rock! All voice parts are welcome and you do NOT have to be in an established a cappella group in order to participate. Scholastic competitors can participate in the Friday competition as well as the Festival Chorus on Saturday if they choose to do so.

SCHOLASTIC SHOWCASE

Here at SING! Texas, we believe that competition inspires growth, both on and off stage, especially when you have the voice of Deke Sharon giving you live feedback! With professional sound provided from the a cappella industry, leading performers and professionals selected nationally, and guaranteed one-on-one masterclasses; the Scholastic Competition is the ultimate learning opportunity! To sign your group up, send a message to compete@singtexas.org.

Groups interested in a performance slot for the Friday Night Scholastic Showcase will need to submit a live unedited video audition of no more than five minutes long. Entries will be accepted on singtexas.org from September 15 through October 1. We are looking for one junior high/middle school group, six high school groups, and six collegiate level groups. A Cappella Education Association judges from around the country will review the videos and select our top groups and announce our final competitor line up on Monday, October 15. If your group is selected:

  • Junior high/middle school group will receive a masterclass and perform two songs to open the show Friday Night (no longer than eight minutes)
  • High school and collegiate level groups will receive a masterclass on Friday afternoon, their own rehearsal space, and soundcheck prior to the start of the Scholastic Competition. Each group will perform a three-song set.
  • The first place groups in each division will get their own masterclass with Deke Sharon before the Saturday Night Spectacular, and perform as a featured group a three-song set in the Saturday night show.
  • Each director of a scholastic performing group will receive a live audio recording from Deke Sharon providing commentary of your group's performance! Directors will receive the audio recording following their group's performance to hear immediate feedback on the most spectacular moments of your set.

PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES

Looking to get the ultimate contemporary a cappella experience from the master himself? Then join the Festival Chorus and be lead by Deke Sharon in two songs for the Saturday Night Spectacular! Repertoire selected by Deke himself, music PDFs and digital learning media of two songs will be shared with registrants who want to perform on the final concert. Music must be learned ahead of the festival as we will only have a sectional and one rehearsal with Deke before we put it together for soundcheck! Come and sing, and be inspired by the producer and arranger of Pitch Perfect, the mastermind behind The Sing Off, and the founder of the Contemporary A Cappella Society.
