Event description

Description

Join Counterpoint for Sing Out, a live music fundraising event dedicated to our Women’s Advocacy Program featuring the music of:

Bruce

Bruce is an acoustic trio led by songwriter Bruce Scavuzzo. Taking influence from Folk, Soul, and the great songwriters of the past, Bruce's music is inspired by the human experience.

Scavuzzo has been working as a facilitator in the men's program at Counterpoint. His songwriting has become a powerful outlet for channeling the experiences he's had working in the program. He looks forward to sharing with the audience at Sing Out!

Gillian Nicola

Hamilton’s Gillian Nicola took an unusual route to becoming a folk/Americana singer-songwriter: trained in classical voice, Nicola spent her teens gigging in a classic rock cover band, singing Janis Joplin and Led Zeppelin before launching herself into alt-country when she began writing songs. Nicola’s music centres around her chameleonic vocals - at one moment with a hint of tobacco in her voice, the next outright rocking - strummed and finger picked guitar, and versatile, melodic songwriting. Nicola’s songs are often built around open and alternate guitar tunings that allow her to throw her music theory upbringing out the window. Nicola's debut full-length album will be released in spring 2019.

With nominations for the Colleen Peterson Songwriting Award, Toronto Independent Music Awards and Hamilton Music Awards, Nicola has toured Canada’s east and west coasts, opened for Amelia Curran and shared the stage for the JUNO Awards’ Love Song Edition with Tom Wilson, Terra Lightfoot, Tomi Swick, and Lori Yates. Engaging in her community is just as important to Nicola as performing. Nicola teaches voice and guitar, volunteers for Girls Rock Camp Toronto, sits on a Musician’s Committee in Hamilton, and runs a monthly songwriters round at Toronto’s The Painted Lady

About Counterpoint and the Women’s Advocacy Program

For over 20 years Counterpoint has provided a successful Partner Assault Response (PAR) program, offering court-mandated educational counselling to men who have been perpetrators of domestic violence. We also offer a Women’s Advocacy Program committed to supporting victims from further violence, and to educate communities about the dynamics of violence against women. We empower women who have experienced abuse or are living in an abusive relationship to take the necessary steps to make positive changes in their lives.

For our entire operating history the Ministry of the Attorney General has only provided funding to support our men’s PAR program. However, it is of the utmost importance that the Women’s Advocacy Program is able to continue. It is crucial that survivors are provided the necessary support not only to keep themselves and their families safe, but also to take time to heal.

All proceeds from Sing Out will go to supporting our Women’s Advocacy Program which currently provides:

-Support from a partner contact worker

-Group Counselling

-Arpillera program (art-based therapy)

-Trauma informed yoga therapy

With your support we can expand on all of our existing programming and provide the following:

-Child minding/Childcare- Many of the women we support are unable to attend the complimentary group counselling or other group activities, because they have young children at home. With your support we can offer child minding services to these families so that the women can have the opportunity to attend a group and work on the healing process.

-TTC Tokens- Many of the women we support do not have the economic resources to add additional transit costs to their weekly expenses. With your support we can offer TTC fare to these individuals free of cost.

-Community Meals- Our women’s group is inspired by a sense of community. Nothing says community like sharing a meal together. Currently we have no available budget for food and beverages. With your support we can create a space that feels like a home away from home.

-Additional creative programming such as the Arpillera and trauma informed yoga therapies.

Thank you for your support! If you are unable to attend the event but you would still like to donate please follow the following link or give us a call at the number below
