Simplifying Response to Intervention (RtI)

Strengthen and Support Student Learning

 January 19 and 20, 2017 - 9:00 AM to 3:30

Presenter:  Mike Mattos is an internationally recognized author, presenter, and practitioner who specializes in uniting teachers, administrators, and support staff to transform schools by implementing response to intervention and professional learning communities. Mike co-created the RTI at Work(tm) model which builds on the foundation of the PLC at Work(tm) process by team structures and a focus on learning, collaboration, and results to drive successful outcomes.

Description:

The experiences and tools the facilitator shares, and the protocols he models, will empower you to build your own timely, targeted, and systematic intervention program to impact student learning aligned with the 4 Guiding Essential Guiding Principles of Practice:

  1. Collective responsibility is a shared belief that the primary responsibility of each member of the organization is to ensure high levels of learning for every child.
  2. Concentrated instruction is a collaborative process that focuses teacher teams on the skills and knowledge most important to the student and his or her future.
  3.   Convergent assessment is an ongoing process of collecting targeted information to add depth and breadth to the understanding of each student’s individual needs, obstacles, and points of learning leverage.
  4.  Certain access is a systematic process that guarantees every student will receive the time and support needed to learn at high levels.

Objectives:

  • Create a school or district culture that focuses on student learning.
  • Build a highly effective, collaborative core program.
  • Utilize common assessments to improve core instruction and guide interventions.
  • Target interventions to meet individual student needs.
  • Understand the critical components and implementation of a behavioral RTI system.
  • Determine the best ways to utilize schoolwide support staff in the RTI process, including psychologists, counselors, special education teachers, and intervention specialists.
  • Use intervention time to extend learning for students that have already mastered grade-level expectations.
  • Understand the district's role and responsibilities in the RTI process.

Region 4, System of District and School Support

No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2001 requires each state to establish a statewide system of intensive and sustained support and improvement for local education agencies and schools receiving Title I funding to increase opportunities for all students to meet state academic content and achievement standards. As a result, the Regional System of District and School Support (RSDSS) was established, and partners with the California Department of Education (CDE), the Comprehensive Assistance Center, and county offices of education to form the Statewide System of School Support (S4) and satisfy the requirements of NCLB. The RSDSS of Region 4 provides leadership, resources, and technical assistance to the schools, districts, and county offices of Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo and Solano in order to increase their collective capacity to support students in meeting or exceeding the state's academic content standards.
