Event description

Description

The Institute for Social and Emotional Learning (IFSEL) is delighted to be able to offer this One-Day Workshop to Administrators, Educators and Counselors from Title 1 Schools in the wider San Francisco Bay Area on a complimentary basis thanks to a grant from the David and Lucile Packard Foundation.

The workshop will take place on January 26, 2018 from 9am – 4pm, at The Silicon Valley Community Center in San Mateo, CA.

Participants will receive a packet of resources, lesson plans and research; and breakfast, lunch and refreshments throughout the day.

The One-Day Workshop will empower teachers through the following workshops:

Morning Session for Educators from all Grades: It’s Fundamental: Curriculum Design, Research and Rationale

“It’s Fundamental” is an interactive presentation that highlights studies and thinking behind incorporating SEL into educational practices. A framework of guiding principles for instruction, teacher responses, and curriculum design will be shared. The session provides curricular approaches, themes, and rationale to make Social and Emotional Learning a meaningful and integral part of your classroom and school.

Late Morning and Afternoon Session for 1-5 Grade Educators: IFSEL Toolbox I: Foundational SEL Tools

We explore the capacity and motivation of children to learn and apply social and emotional learning skills to their daily lives. This experiential session will describe a lesson sequence to help your school get started with SEL. You will explore the use of creative metaphor and analytic thinking to activate the hearts and minds of elementary-aged children in pursuit of their first tools for SEL. These tools will include elements of self regulation and conflict resolution. This workshop can be adapted for teachers introducing foundational SEL tools for older students, as well.

Late Morning and afternoon Session for 6-12 Grade Educators: SEL Insights for Subject Area Teaching, Homeroom and Advisory

SEL brings a wide and creative lens to view subject area teaching, Advisory or homeroom. This session offers the opportunity to consider design ideas—goals, role of the homeroom and Advisory, timing and grouping—to strengthen the classroom with intention and focus. Attendees will engage in a series of experiences that activate personal reflection, meaningful conversations, rituals, and positive group interactions among students. We also explore ways to make Advisory/homeroom a place where students have opportunities for leadership, collaboration, compassion, and stress management.

Eligibility & Pricing

Please note that this workshop is complimentary for Bay Area Title 1 educators. All registrations will be cross-referenced for eligibility. The price for Non-Title 1 Educators attending is $495.
