The Social & Interactive Media Lab (SIMLab) is an interdisciplinary research environment at Loyola University Chicago’s School of Communication devoted to the in-depth study of social phenomena at the intersection of society and technology. The Lab provides the space and resources for faculty and advanced students to work on collaborative projects focusing on driving the conversation on issues in digital communication. The SIMLab conducts social scientific research in communication, with major thematic areas including social media, advertising, journalism, games, and social justice in a digital era.

• Advance high-impact research in digital communication addressing social outcomes, and technological literacies.

• Facilitate the development of engaged and collaborative learning, project-based curricula, and hybrid pedagogies in digital communication.

• Foster a forum for professional development (e.g., consulting, software development) for digital communication students that they will transfer to careers in media.

• Provide a laboratory setting for faculty driven research projects in digital communication.

• Promote discussion and debate of social and technical issues currently facing our society and community at large.

André Brock is an Assistant Professor at the University of Michigan in Communication Studies.  His research analyzes racial identity formation on the Internet and in other digital technologies. In recent work, he has examined racialized critiques of an African-American themed open source web browser; representations of race and gender in horror videogames; and African American usage of Twitter.
