Simeon Solomon and Homosocial Networks
Join us for a guest lecture by Professor Jongwoo Jeremy Kim on Jewish Victorian artist, Simeon Solomon. Frequently representing homosociability in his artwork. Pr. Kim will aruge that Solomon's paintings and drawings that circulated before and after his arrest in 1873 for buggery function as network actors, and help us understand the limits of a Victorian, clandestine homosocial network in relation to the "homosexual panic" Solomon's scandal caused.
Professor Kim is Associate Professor of Art History at the Univeristy of Louisville's Hite Art Intsitute, and the 2017-2019 President of the Historians of British Art. He is the author of sevel books including, Painted Men in Britain, 1868-1918: Royal Academicians and Masculinities (Ashgate, 2012; paperback Routledge, 2016) and forthcoming Transplanted: Wandering Body Parts and the Queer Uncanny.
