The 2017-2018 Phil Kramer Recital Series begins with a performance by inFLUX on Friday, September 8, 2017 at 7:30PM in the sanctuary of New Hope Lutheran Church in Missouri City. The program will include works by Rorem, Salzedo, Saint-Saëns, Saariaho, Ravel, and Piazzolla. Tickets are available online or at the door for $10. Children and students are admitted free. A reception with the artists will follow the performance.

inFLUX, based in Houston, was founded by flutist Izumi Miyahara and harpist Emily Klein. The ensemble seeks to bring innovative and progressive concerts to the community and act as a catalyst for social change through music. As part of inFLUX's ongoing dedication to community engagement, the group has created and performed in arts events at sites sponsored by Music for Autism, University of Houston's Honors College, New Hope Housing Brays Crossing, Daniel Pearl World Music Days, and Holocaust Museum Houston. Other performance venues include the Wortham Center, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Rothko Chapel, the Menil Collection, HISD elementary and Alief ISD high schools, and Houston Methodist Hospitals. Emily and Izumi met while studying at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music and are former members of Da Camera of Houston's Young Artist Program.

Flutist Izumi Miyahara is a freelance artist and educator based in Houston, Texas. She currently holds the Assistant Principal Flute/Piccolo position with the Symphony of Southeast Texas in Beaumont and has performed with the Houston, San Antonio, Corpus Christi and New World Symphonies, the Houston Grand Opera, Houston Ballet, Louisiana Philharmonic and Breckenridge Music Festival Orchestras. Izumi maintains a private flute studio and coaches clinics and masterclasses for organizations such as the American Festival of the Arts, Houston Youth Symphony, and Houston Flute Fest. In addition to her musical activities, Izumi is a certified yoga instructor in the Pralaya Yoga System. A native of New York City and a graduate of the Juilliard School Pre-College Program, Izumi completed her Bachelor of Music at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and received a Master of Music from Rice University. Ms. Klein is in her fourth season as Principal Harpist with Opera in the Heights (Houston, TX) and previously held the Principal Harp chair with the Orchestra of the Southern Finger Lakes (Corning, NY). As an active freelance musician she has performed with the Houston, San Antonio and Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestras and the Houston Grand Opera for their production of Das Rheingold. Compeitition credits include first-place in the Senior Division of the 2012 TexASTA Solo Competition, honorable mention at the 2011 Lyon and Healy Awards, and first place in the 2010 Mildred Milligan Harp Competition. Ms. Klein has also participated in prestigious summer festivals such as the National Orchestral Institute, Bowdoin International Music Festival, Round Top Festival Institute, Texas Music Festival, Castleton Festival, Chautauqua Music Festival, and Interlochen Arts Camp among others. In July 2012 she was awarded a Lovett Travel Fellowship to study the harp in Italy with Elisabeth Fontan-Binoche and Anna Loro. Ms. Klein is a native of Gladwyne, Pennsylvania and studied with Joan Raeburn Holland at Interlochen Arts Academy. Ms Klein obtained her Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University where she was a student of Paula Page, former Houston Symphony Principal Harpist. Ms. Klein enjoys teaching the harp at the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts and at the American Festival of the Arts Summer Music Conservatory in addition to her diverse performance schedule.
