Event description
Enjoy the experience of playing with color by applying dye to silk.

About this Event

Instructor: Lisa Packard

After this course you will learn how salt, rubbing alcohol and gutta create effects with dye on silk. You will know the materials needed to create a finished product.

What is silk painting?

Silk painting is the application of paints or dyes directly onto silk fabric using an exciting array of watercolor techniques. The colors are brilliant, vibrant and translucent and merge on the fabric which remains soft and to touch. The painted fabric is then ironed or steamed to fix the colors.

Techniques include using a resist, gutta or wax for example, to help define lines. A variety of effects are created using salt and alcohol. Techniques also include free flow, like watercolor, and line building.

Originating from China, silk painting is an art form with over 2000 years of history that involves applying colored pigment to silk cloth.

Class Structure: The first 30 minutes will be a discussion while viewing samples of techniques and how materials can achieve different effects. The demonstration and discussion will be followed by a two hour hands on painting with a finished product for you to keep.

Fees: $20 per person; includes all materials and dye required to create a finished 60" x 12" piece that will be yours to keep.

What to bring: Please come with some ideas of what you might like to paint. Everything else you will need will be provided.

Prerequisites: None
