Event description
Silenced: An Unlock Civics Documentary is a Chicago Votes production highlighting the disenfranchisement and silencing of people in prison.

About this event

Silenced: An Unlock Civics Documentary is a story of the democracy we have created in the United States, that silences millions of people who have been or are currently disenfranchised through incarceration.

When people in prison cannot vote, influence policy, or hold elected officials accountable, things like inhumane prison conditions, problematic judges, and “tough-on-crime” policies persist more easily.

This project is the work of young Chicago organizers, creatives, academics, and most importantly, those directly impacted by our harmful systems of incarceration and exclusion.

Join Chicago Votes in the virtual premiere of Silenced: An Unlock Civics Documentary on Thursday, May 13th at 6pm CT. Then, join us for a Zoom panel featuring directly impacted individuals, lawmakers, and organizers as we discuss the documentary, the path towards enfranchisement in prisons, and more.
