A memorial service to honor the life and work of Dr. Alexander T. "Sasha" Shulgin (1925-2014) will be held at the Berkeley Community Theater on Saturday, August 2, 2014 from 1-6 pm.
You may be familiar with Sasha's groundbreaking research in chemistry or his seminal books PiHKAL and TiHKAL written together with Ann Shulgin. Not as many of us knew the man himself; his sense of humor and skills as a teacher, his grace and kindness. But this is a free and inclusive event, open not only to Sasha's friends and family but to all those whose lives have been touched or transformed by Sasha and Ann Shulgin’s work. We will share stories, savor memories, and hold space for a future that is wide open, in no small part because of the prodigious life work of Sasha and Ann Shulgin.
In the manner of many dinners and holiday parties at the Shulgin home, the reception following the service will be a potluck. All are invited to bring dishes made with love. Of course that's optional, especially if you’re coming from afar. Please note, due to venue policy, no alcohol, other intoxicants, or smoking is allowed.
This is a free event; however, we urge you to RSVP. An accurate count will allow us to plan accordingly, so if you are planning on attending, please do RSVP here. If your plans change, you can come back to this eventbrite page to cancel your RSVP, so that others may attend in your place.
Doors open at 1pm: If you’ve brought something for the potluck, please hand it to a greeter.
Service begins promptly at 2pm: Please enter the theater in silence, well before 2pm. Doors will close. Late arrivals may watch the service on a screen in the lobby.
Reception to follow: Yummy Potluck Food. Water and coffee will be provided. Formal tea service in the lobby. Connection and merriment.
Event ends at 6pm.
Please note: No alcohol, any other intoxicants, or smoking of any kind is permitted in the venue or on the grounds, which are public school facilities.
For those who can’t attend in person, we will be streaming a live webcast from the theatre. The link to the webcast is: http://www.ustream.tv/channel/sasha-shulgin-memorial .
