About this event

BMI Shearing Fellow Bonnie Chau and special guests invite you to participate in a night of show & tell. Hear artists, writers, and curators explore themes of ritual, fortune, and luck in their creative work. Attendees are encouraged to share an object, short text, or piece of writing – perhaps one that connects us to the city and mythos of Las Vegas.

Bonnie Chau is a writer from Southern California. She earned her MFA in fiction and translation from Columbia University; and has received fellowship and residency support from Kundiman, Art Farm Nebraska, the American Literary Translators Association, Vermont Studio Center, and the Millay Colony. She is the author of the short story collection All Roads Lead to Blood (2018).

Hyun Gi Park is a Korean-American artist based in Los Angeles, CA. Park obtained her BFA in Sculpture + Extended Media at Virginia Commonwealth University (Richmond, VA). Hyun Gi’s works create rituals into fictionalized ceremonies with new age health trends and consecrating them. Her practice involves incense, historically used to measure time, to reimagine new time structures for gestures. Her recent installation and digital works evolve from performances, attempting to replicate the visceral, and immortalizing it. She has been awarded residencies including Eyebeam Rapid Response for a Better Digital Future (Brooklyn, NY), MACAO (Milan, Italy), and Vermont Studio Center (Johnson, Vermont). Her works have been featured in numerous exhibitions worldwide and has performed in the Pittsburgh Performance Art Festival (Pittsburgh, PA), LabBodies Performance Art Review (Baltimore, MD), and Art Licks Weekend (London, UK). Park also works as tattooer, incense maker, bookbinder, designer, and runs BABOSHOP, a multi-use space and studio.

Chukwuma Ndulue is the author of the chapbook Boys Quarter (Ugly Duckling Presse). His work has appeared in BOAAT, Muse/A Journal, Tinderbox, PANK, Brooklyn Poets and other publications. He has been the recipient of fellowships from Columbia University and Kenyon College.

Maxwell Williams is a perfumer (as UFO Parfums), olfactory artist, DJ/producer, and researcher based in Los Angeles. He sits on the board of the Institute for Art and Olfaction. Williams’ work places perfume in the context of performance, sculpture, and photography by exploring a personal history of sadomasochism, techno and gabber raves, global trade routes, heartbreak, and the psychology behind the hedonics of scent. Williams held solo exhibitions at Galerie de Thorigny, Paris in 2020, and at SEASON Gallery, Seattle in 2019. He wrote/directed an olfactory audioplay at the Experimental Scent Summit, London and held a residency at Mediamatic, Amsterdam in 2018. His olfactory techno event Scent Rave will be held virtually at the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles (MOCA) on New Year’s Eve 2020.
