Event description

Description

In this special masterclass with Miles Franklin Award-winner, A.S. Patrić, writers will be taken through a study of the craft and technique essential for writing unique and vital short stories. Explore character development, narrative function, voice and tone, as well as the ideas and aesthetics specific to short stories, with a focus on how to deploy these skills practically. Discussion will be warm and inclusive, exploring a range of genres and styles but always with a focus on the art of fiction. Writers will cover:

• A method for developing literary craft and a functional writing process.

• An understanding of the narrative dynamics that create compelling short stories.

• A better idea of how to develop characters with integrated, integral narratives.

• Understanding the scope and functions of short narratives.

• Practical knowledge of Australian literary market for local short story writers.

Before Black Rock White City won Australia’s most prestigious award in 2016, A.S. Patrić had published two story collections: Las Vegas for Vegans (short-listed in the 2013 Queensland Literary Awards) and The Rattler & other stories. Individually, his stories have been winners of the Ned Kelly Award and the Booranga Prize and twice published in Best Australian Stories. In November 2018, he published his third collection, The Butcherbird Stories.
