Event description

Description

“A Shorewatch is a 10 minute cetacean survey and we carry out these surveys from specific locations. At present we do not have a Shorewatch site in Kinghorn, but after being contacted by a number of individuals from the Forth Marine Mammal Project, we have decided to look into options for a Shorewatch site in Kinghorn.

We are always in need of more volunteers to make the Shorewatch project run and we would very much appreciate any time you can commitment to Shorewatch. Shorewatch relies on community volunteers to take part in our surveys along the Scottish coastline. All the data collected from our surveys help us better understand the movements of whales and dolphins, so we can better protect them and advise policy makers and governments on how best protect these amazing creatures.

WDC Shorewatch will be running an introduction to Shorewatch Evening on the 21st June. 6.30 – 9.30

During this meeting we would like to take the opportunity to discuss with attendees, if running a specific Shorewatch site in Kinghorn would work and discuss options on how WDC could support this site.

We will cover the following:

Introductions to Shorewatch

- Protocol and data recording

- Shorewatch in Kinghorn

- what Shorewatch needs from volunteers

- what Kinghorn volunteers would need from Shorewatch

- how to support each other

- funding and purchasing of Shorewatch equipment.

- Outdoor practical ; in which we will go to a local watching site and practice how to carry out a Shorewatch
