Shoreline Habitat Unit Reef Build
Overview
Shoreline Habitat Unit Reef Build
Join the SCORE team for a fun and unusual oyster reef build using concrete Shoreline Habitat Units!
WHAT: Using pallets of Shoreline Habitat Units that have been pre-placed by barge on the shoreline, we'll be unloading, arranging and anchoring the oyster castles to create new oyster reef habitat. This build will entail moderate physical activity and lifting loads of up to 30 lbs.
WHEN: Thursday January 29th 10-1 & Friday January 30th 10:30-1:30
WHERE: Meet at the Port Royal Boat Landing (also called The Sands) at 50 Sands Beach Road. Volunteers will ride on boats to the build site and be dropped off in groups.
WHY: Oysters are one of coastal South Carolina's most valuable natural resources, offering clean water, storm protection, fish habitat and delicious, sustainable seafood! Oyster castles provide a surface for baby oysters to settle on and grow into new oyster reefs.
WHAT TO BRING: Please bring a water bottle and wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes and clothes that can get muddy. Lace-up or tight-fitting shoes are ideal, as we will be working in the pluff mud. We'll provide water, sunscreen and bug spray if needed.
