“Love thy Neighbor – especially when s/he is hungry” is UUCA's November spotlight on hunger in Atlanta.
Imagine not knowing if you will have enough food for your next meal. This is food insecuirty.
Food insecurity is rare within our UUCA walls. But among the children at Hope-Hill Elementary School, it is a living, breathing factor in daily life. Almost all Hope-Hill children are poor and qualify for free breakfast and lunch at school. But this is not enough:
- Will there be food at dinner at the end of the month?
- Is there food on the weekends?
- Is available food nutritious, or does is “just fill bellies up with cheap calories?”
This is a time to learn and a time to act. This is a project for everyone at UUCA.
A Time to Donate and Deliver Food: On , UUCA members will pack and deliver 130 boxes of Thanksgiving and other food to families living in Bedford Pine, a low-income community that is home to a large number of children who go to Hope-Hill Elementary School.
This is a project for ALL. How can you participate?
Opportunity 1: Be a Thanksgiving elf! You and your family can sign up to shop for Thanksgiving items for one Bedford Pine family. You’ll get a grocery list of items to purchase for no more than $20. Just sign up for a ticket above so we know to count on you. We'll send you a suggested shopping list and instructions for donating food.
Opportunity 2: Make Thanksgiving dinner a feast! If you want to help, but cannot shop, you can make a cash donation. We need to raise some cash to purchase the hams or chickens for all those boxes! Click here to make a cash donation.
Opportunity 3: Provide the finishing touch! You can volunteer yourself and your family that same , to pack boxes with food, add notes written by the RE children, and, if you wish, deliver them. The food will be distributed at Bedford Pine to families with the guidance of friends at Operation PEACE. Click here to sign up to pack boxes. Be sure to let us know if you're planning on helping us deliver them to the receiveing families.
