Description

Richmond’s historic, river-front commercial area is now a modern river-front dining, shopping, and night-life district housed in historic, industrial buildings. This 2 hour tour takes us along Richmond’s canal which fueled the commerce and hold the story of pre-20th Century Richmond; as well as the story of Richmond's infamous slave trade. Meander through a locale filled with converted tobacco warehouses turned into Civil War hospitals; interspersed with murals painted by artists from around the world.


You will see:

  • Richmond’s beautiful riverwalk and canal

  • Center for the domestic slave trade in the United States

  • Oldest house in the city (1737)

  • The 3rd oldest building in the City, Historic Masons’ Hall (1785)

  • Historic Main Street Station

  • Richmond first African-American burial ground and infamous Lumpkin’s jail

  • Murals interspersed throughout Shockoe Bottom

Cost: The tour is free, but it is customary to tip your guide at the conclusion of your tour

Where it begins: The First Freedom Monument (the big needle on the corner), 14th St. and Cary St.

Parking: Street parking is free on the weekends.
